One teacher’s side project started as a way to unwind. Now it’s lighting up homes — and minds — across the country.
By day, Jenna Morales teaches 10th-grade English and helps run her school’s yearbook club. By night? She’s the unexpected designer behind one of the most talked-about new home décor pieces for educators: a sculptural, glowing work of art called the Gem Filament Lamp.
The idea came during winter break. Burned out from grading essays and managing hybrid learning chaos, Jenna was craving a creative outlet that had nothing to do with teaching — but still reflected who she was.
“I love my students, but I needed a way to mark the shift — like, when school ends, I get to exist outside of that role,” she says.
So she started sketching, scrolling, and eventually stumbled into a design rabbit hole. What emerged was a project she now calls the Teachers Off Duty Project — a curated collection of tools and décor for educators reclaiming their space and time. The centerpiece? A glowing Gem Filament Lamp that’s both a mood-setter and a personal mantra.
The Gem Filament Lamp isn’t just pretty — it’s designed to reset the tone of a room.
“It’s the opposite of school lighting,” Jenna laughs. “It’s calm, intentional — it says, ‘You made it through the day, now breathe.’”
Originally just something she made for herself, Jenna posted a photo of her desk setup on Instagram — and fellow teachers flooded her DMs asking where they could get the lamp. From there, the “Teachers Off Duty” brand started to take shape.
Now, it’s more than a product. It’s a signal: a daily reminder that teachers deserve beautiful, restful spaces, too.
The Gem Filament Lamp is available now — and selling fast.
